There are lots of retailers of new slings, and many are small family businesses, so its great to show your support for these businesses. Sling library customers can also get discounts from many retailers. There are lots of reason you may want to buy pre-loved
Where to buyThere are a lot of general facebook groups for buying and selling.
As well as the general groups there are specific groups for particular brands. Ebay You can sometimes get a surprising bargain on ebay! Local sale sites, local car boot sales and charity shops can also yield pleasant surprises! What to look out forFakes There are a number of brands of slings that are faked or imitated on a large scale. The 2 most common are Ergo and Moby. So, its a fake, so what? The issues you will come across with fakes include
What to look out for when making a purchase As with most things you buy, its 'buyer beware'. In all cases bear in mind that colours can vary in photos depending on lighting conditions, you may need to ask the seller about this. It is wise to ask the seller specific questions about the condition of the sling/carrier, and ideally ask for photos to show these. For a buckled carrier
For a ring sling
For ring slings/mei tais
For a woven wrap
You may also need to ask about how the sling/carrier has been cared for e.g. what washing detrergent has been used, whether there are any pets in the home. How to buy Unless you are buying locally and paying cash in person, you should always buy via paypal, and always pay goods and services. This gives you important protection when you are buying something you have not seen in person, from someone you may not know. You should ensure that the sling/carrier is sent with appropriate postage that will cover the replacement cost in the unlikely event that your purchase is lost in the post. Ensure that you are clear on the pricing, whether postage and paypal fees are all included in the purchase price. Trades/payment plans If you are trading a wrap/carrier, each party will need to agree the trade value of their sling. If the value is not equal, then one person will need to agree a payment. You will then each send the agreed value via paypal (again, goods and services for your protection). Once payment is received, slings are posted (again using appropriate postage) For a payment plan, an invoice should be raised via paypal, and then payments are made as agreed, the sling will be sent once you have paid in full. What if something goes wrong There are sales and purchases going on all the time, and in the majority of cases, this will go fantastically! Resulting in lots of happy sling parents all around! Occasionally there may be issues, and in many cases this will be purely unintentional. The sling may not arrive in the expected condition, or it may not arrive at all. The first thing to do is to make contact with the person you have bought it from. Hopefully the issue can be resolved swiftly and amicably. You have 180 days from date of purchase to raise a dispute with paypal, this should be enough time for you to have attempted to resolve the issue amicably. If you bought through a facebook group/page and you are unsure how to proceed, you should contact the admin of the page for advice. The babywearing community is a great community and buying and selling is a big part of it, helping to continue to spread the slingy love.
