I set up Carlisle Sling Library in 2015 with a simple aim - to help everyone carry their babies. Over time, the library has grown beyond what I could ever have imagined. I believe it has the potential to grow even more.
At the moment the library is owned and run by me as a sling consultant. I have a group of fantastic helpers, who I am very grateful to, and I'm sure you will agree that they do a fantastic job, but they are limited in what they can do, due to the terms of my insurance. I believe that the sling community in Carlisle deserves more than I can offer, and also has the potential to offer more as a community. I think that the only way of achieving this is to restructure to form a community group, following either a charitable or social enterprise model. The aim in doing this will be to allow the library to offer more to families. Myself and the helpers have come up with lots of ideas that we would like to explore for the future and we are really excited about them. Some of the ideas include meets during the week, a regular dedicated venue for the library, more trained volunteers to help and a 'travelling' library to visit playgroups/events or other family related groups. The first step is to the decide on the structure we will run under. There are a number of different options and we need to explore these to ensure that we have a model that is 'fit for purpose' As part of the ongoing process WE NEED YOU! I have always tried to be open to ideas for how to run the library, but this has, to a large extent, been limited due to the fact that I work every weekday and also have a young family. The aim will be to have a number of volunteers who can help run the library and for this to be transferable to ensure longevity. Volunteers will be expected to help on a regular basis (perhaps once a month). The kind of volunteer roles might be
There may also be opportunities to train as a peer supporter, this role would then be to

Please have a think to see if you would like to be involved in the library. You would be expected to be able to commit to your role for at least 6 months. You need to make a serious commitment for the benefit of the library and yourself, and so that nobody is let down. That commitment will not be too onerous and would hopefully be enjoyable and beneficial for you too. Whilst the project is developing we may need additional helpers for specific roles. Do you have any skills that you could offer!? Please get in touch if you have any questions/would like to offer help!
